(Carrie, Sara, Tyler, Mallory, Joy, and Katie Marie at Empower Summit in
September 2019)

For this edition of our newsletter, we thought it would be fun to catch up with SPSF NWA staff to see what they’ve been doing while working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

TYLER

What has been the biggest adjustment for you during this pandemic?
My biggest adjustment has been the lack of human contact with those I care about most.

Is there anything fun you’ve been doing/learning/creating while being home?
My biggest news is that I adopted a rescue pup. Her name is Abbie and she turns 1 later this month. She is a all legs and pure energy. She sure is keeping me on my toes.

What are you looking forward to?
We’re a close team, I cannot wait to return, when it is safe, to laugh and create together.

RRIE

What has been the biggest adjustment for you during this pandemic?
Getting my son to understand that even though I am home, I am working and he can’t talk to me anytime he wants to. Also- the cat does what she wants like walking across my computer during virtual meetings.

Is there anything fun you’ve been doing/learning/creating while being home?
I have been crocheting more so I have gotten more work done on my son’s blanket that I have been working on forever. I have also been working on jigsaw puzzles and helping get the garden ready to plant.

What has helped you stay focused while staying home?
I have listened to a lot of music to keep me focused and stay on track.

KATIE MARIE

What has been the biggest adjustment for you during this pandemic?
Working from home while also managing keeping a 5-year-old busy and engaged. Also- I feel like I’m doing the dishes every 10 minutes.

Is there anything fun you’ve been doing/learning/creating while being home?
Since my husband isn’t able to travel for work, we’ve been cooking meals we don’t normally get to experiment with- he recently bought a hibachi grill. I’ve also planted a garden to (hopefully) grow fresh vegetables and herbs.

What has helped you stay focused while staying home?
Some of my best friends are healthcare workers working on the front lines and knowing that by staying home, I’m doing my part to keep them safe.

SARA

What has been the biggest adjustment for you during this pandemic?
Miraculously becoming a 1st grade teacher. Working from home and trying to get in the daily lessons for my 7-year-old has been an interesting feat for both us.

Is there anything fun you’ve been doing/learning/creating while being home?
Eli and I have been playing lots of board games and ladderball when we’re not fighting over what to watch on Netflix. Captain Underpants always wins.

What’s one word or phrase that sums up your working from home situation?
Strengthening

MALLORY

What has been the biggest adjustment for you during this pandemic?
The biggest adjustment for me is not being around my friends and family as much. I am a very social person, so spending most of my time alone has been different.

What has helped you stay focused while staying home?
I volunteered to take home all of the office plants. So having a “part of the office” at home has helped me focus. I am happy to report that all the plants are thriving at my house!

What are you looking forward to?
I am looking forward to working back in the office! I have truly missed seeing my SPSF NWA family—co-workers and recipients! It will be so nice to see everyone in person.

JOY

What has been the biggest adjustment for you during this pandemic?
Spending so much time at home is rare for our family. When we get bored, I try to keep perspective and stay positive! While the circumstances that keep us home are scary and horrible, we have appreciated some unscheduled time to relax and truly bond as a family.

Is there anything fun you’ve been doing/learning/creating while being home?
Usually, we are always on the go. We now have time to cook and enjoy meals at the dinner table as a family. We will forever cherish this special time together – especially NOW since my daughter will be driving next year!

What has helped you stay focused while staying home?
An attitude of gratitude helps me to stay focused. I realize how blessed we are to have jobs and a home to shelter in. It always helps to help others. We have cooked meals for healthcare providers and given what we can to help people most impacted by the crisis. I have tried to avoid the negative and political sides of this and focus on the good in people.
