Buying My First House – Meet a Recipient Featuring Stephanie Harlan
Meet Stephanie Harlan, and her sons, Anderson and Elijah. Stephanie is currently attending the University of Arkansas, studying nursing, and holds a near-perfect GPA.
We asked Stephanie to tell us more about herself and her journey to receive her education.
How did you hear about SPSF NWA?
I was browsing for scholarships online and discovered the SPSF NWA website. I was thrilled to find a scholarship for parents in my position.
What made you decide to go back to school?
I had been working as a surgical technologist for many years, but I wanted more out of patient care. Nursing was the natural progression from the position I was in, and I have enjoyed nursing school very much.
Why do you value education?
In life the only way to thoroughly succeed is to get the best and highest education you can. I am showing my children, right now, that education is the key to getting where you want to be in life.
Other than financially, what impact has SPSF NWA made on your life?
The support that comes from this organization to the recipients is unparalleled. Every fall before classes start, there is a fun family event. To this day, my youngest son talks about the train ride on the Arkansas/Missouri Railroad. I don’t know of any other scholarship program that invests so much time and support into the recipients. It is truly a gift.
How will life be different for you and your family after you graduate?
After I graduate I plan to buy my first house. My children are so excited to finally have our own space! Also, it will be nice to settle into a routine, without scheduling study time!
What is one of your favorite parenting moments?
I have gained some weight while in school, and my little one came and gave me a big hug on my belly and said, “oh mommy, I just love hugging your squishy belly!” He doesn’t care that it isn’t washboard abs; he loves that it is squishy like a pillow. “That makes the hugs better,” he says! I can’t argue with that!
What do you enjoy most about being a parent?
To my babies, I am the most important person in their world. That makes everything worth it.
What is your favorite time of the day?
I love right when I pick the kids up from school. They are so excited about something and have to tell me right away. It seems like we haven’t seen each other for weeks, not just a few hours.
Name something you never leave home without:
I never leave without my Kindle. You never know when you might get a few minutes to read!
What would you like to say to SPSF NWA supporters?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This scholarship has been the linchpin in keeping my head above financial water while in school. The support each donor gives means so much to parents like me. It touches my heart that so many people and businesses in the community genuinely care and support this endeavor. I am blessed to have been able to receive this amazing scholarship, and it is all because of the supporters’ continuous belief that we can make a difference in our children’s and our lives.
