PROGRAM SERVICES
Who We Serve
SPSF NWA serves residents of Carroll, Madison, and Washington counties who are living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty guideline, have custody of one or more minor children, and are enrolled in post-secondary education. In 2011 we anticipate providing direct financial assistance to 140 families (120 in Washington County, 10 in Carroll County and 10 in Madison County).
We offer direct financial assistance in the form of scholarships each academic semester (Spring, Summer and Fall). Unlike traditional scholarships, Single Parent Scholarships through SPSF NWA are not restricted to books or tuition, but can be used for general living expenses such as child care, gasoline, rent, utilities, car insurance or even groceries. Full time students (taking 12 or more credit hours) receive $1,750 per semester while part-time students (taking 6 or more credit hours) receive $900. Summer scholarships are $900.
In addition to direct financial assistance, we partner with other community groups to provide opportunities for personal growth and family recreation that our students would not be able to afford. We also provide information and referrals to other agencies to address needs outside the scope of our services.
The Student Support Committee of SPSF NWA is pleased to offer the PRO Program to current scholarship recipients.
The PRO Program utilizes experienced professionals in the community as advisors for current SPSF NWA scholarship recipients. These volunteer advisors (PROs) and students are matched according to degree program or career field. Both attend a one-hour training session, which includes an overview of the program, goals and guidelines. Following the training, PROs are introduced to their assigned students, and together they will agree upon a date to meet for a one-hour advising session.
Students utilize their time with the PRO to learn about working conditions, day-to-day work duties, skills required for success, pathways to promotion, and other opportunities available in the field. The intention is to give students nearing graduation a glimpse into the real-life workday of professionals who hold the degree they are working towards.
Programs are offered in February and September. If you are interested in participating in the PRO program as a student or as a PRO advisor, please email Carrie Montgomery at carrie@spsfnwa.org.
